Library: Linking to Online Resources from Moodle
Faculty can link directly to articles, streaming video, and other items in many of the library's online resources from their Moodle course web site. To ensure that students can access these items from off-campus, please follow the steps below.
Step 1: Find the Persistent or Stable URL
To obtain the URL for an item, please do not copy and paste the URL that displays in your browser. These URLs are generally dynamic, meaning that they only work on your computer during your search session.
Instead, many databases will provide you a persistent or stable URL that can be accessed from any computer, on or off-campus. Here is how to find the persistent URL for several common vendors:
|
Vendor |
Instructions |
URL will work from off-campus? |
| Ebsco | From the list of search results, select the article title link. In the list of Tools along the right sidebar, select: Permalink. |
Yes |
|
Films on Demand
|
From the list of search results, select the film title link. Towards the bottom of the screen, look for: Title URL. | Yes |
| Gale | From the list of search results, select the article title link. In the upper right corner of the screen, look for the Bookmark link, then copy the Bookmark URL. |
Edit URL |
| JSTOR & ARTstor | From the list of search results, chose the Item Information to see the Stable URL. | Edit URL |
| LexisNexis Academic | From the list of search results, select the article title link. In the upper right corner of the screen, select the Copy Document Link |
Edit URL |
| Ovid | From the list of search results, check the box next to the citation, then choose the Email link (in the row of links immediately above the search results). Enter your email address and choose the Send Email button. A stable URL will automatically be included in the email. |
Edit URL |
| Project Muse | Choose either the View HTML or View PDF link, then copy the URL from your browser. The URLs are stable. | Edit URL |
| Proquest | From the list of search results, select the article title link. Choose Copy link to copy the stable URL. | Yes |
| ScienceDirect | From the page with the full information about the article, right-click the PDF link, and choose Copy Link Location (Firefox) or Copy Shortcut (Internet Explorer). This link is a stable URL. |
Edit URL
|
| Wilson | From the list of search results, select the article title link. At the bottom of the record, next to Persistent URL, choose Click to copy the ... link. This will copy the URL plus the article citation to your clipboard. Paste the contents of your clipboard into Moodle. If the article's author, title, or other citation information is copied, delete this information from the URL. | Edit URL |
How to edit resource links to work from off-campus:
In some cases you will need to edit the URL in order for the item to be accessible from off-campus (see table above; e.g. JSTOR).
- Follow the directions above to copy the "Stable URL" or "Persistent link"
- Add the following information to your URL:
- Right after the http:// add 0-
- Just before the next / add .clark.up.edu
Examples:
Before edit: http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0037-...
After edit: http://0-links.jstor.org.clark.up.edu/sici?sici=0037...
