Food & Behavior Policies

The mission of the University of Portland's Clark Library is to serve the students, faculty, and staff of the University by providing library resources and services necessary for teaching, learning, and scholarly achievement. The library does this by acquiring and organizing collections and resources and by facilitating research through its access and educational services. In order to maintain a library environment that supports the library's mission, the following guidelines have been established:

Cell phones

Extended cell phone calls are potentially disruptive to the others nearby. We ask that you use good judgment when answering a call. Monitor the level of your voice, and for calls lasting more than a minute or two, move to the stair tower or entrance of the library.

Please set your phone on vibrate when you are in the library.

Food and drink

Drinks must be in spill-proof containers in all areas of the Library.

Food is limited to snack or wrapped items that are consumed individually. Group meals or open plates of food (such as pizza, and other take-out meals) should be consumed outside the library.

Food and drink pose a potential risk to library collections, equipment, and furnishings. We therefore ask that you act responsibly when consuming food and drink in the library. Please report spills immediately to service desk personnel so that they can be cleaned up quickly.

Tobacco

The Library follows the University’s policy on tobacco use which does not allow smoking or vaping in any of its buildings or while attending University sponsored events. Only students over 21 may possess or consume tobacco or use inhalant delivery systems while on campus and then only in the designated smoking locations. For further information, please refer to the campus Smoking Policy.

Noise & Behavior

Loud or disruptive behavior is not allowed in the Library. See the Noise Policy for more information about quiet areas within the Clark Library.
